about the design :
The composition of this artwork is heavily inspired by the Lanna leg tattoos of Thailand. In my recent travels, I had the opportunity to meet some masters who practice this ancient art and was immediately intrigued by it. Since then I have been trying to study the design motifs and the techniques used to make these tattoos. I have broken down the Lanna style patterns into simpler forms and rearranged them to create similar patterns, but in my own style. I have attempted to replicate the textures of a traditional Lanna tattoo by using closely separated lines to fill in the patterns. I have done this in some of my recent hand poked tattoos as well.
Similar to traditional Sak Yant tattooing, Lanna tattoos are also made using a long stick, with needles attached to one end. However, the needles used are much larger in Lanna tattooing to fill larger areas of skin with ink. I plan to study more on this subject in my future projects.
