about the design:
The entire composition of this design resembles that of a Sak Yant backpiece. The central deity used for this piece is ‘Raavan’, the warrior king in the story of ‘Ramayan’. The arrangement of his 10 heads is inspired by the traditional, theatrical masks of Majuli (a river island in Assam). The geometrical shapes in this artwork are inspired by ancient Vedic and Buddhist yantras.
My reluctance to copy the Sak Yant elements without deep awareness of their meanings have pushed me to combine different elements to achieve a similar visual impression. The ornamental script used in this artwork is part of my preliminary xperiments with the scripts used in Sak Yant tattoos (Pali, Khmer, Khom, etc.) and the Assamese script. I shall share more about this xperiment in my future projects. Similar to traditional Sak Yant, I have made this artwork with the intention of blessing the wearer with positive life experiences.
