about the design :

This design is influenced by a specific style of Sak Yant backpiece  tattoos which primarily consists of a combination of geometric diagrams and script in its composition.

In the traditional diagrams, a geometric figure is divided into smaller shapes (generally squares or circles) with Sak Yant script written in and around these diagrams to connect the entire composition of the backpiece. In this design, I have experimented with the fundamental square shapes to create geometric figures which connect to form a larger geometric diagram.

The script used in this design is the recent development of my experiments with the strokes used in the Assamese and Pali script. Another aspect of this script is that it helps me practice being in a constant state of ‘flow’. While writing this script, I try not to think about how a charecter would look. Rather, I focus on maintaining a constant hand speed and making quick decisions on the individual strokes that would make up a charecter. This practice of not thinking about the final look of a character and only focusing on the stroke that I am doing, helps me be in a meditative state. As this script is purely ornamental at the moment, there is no visual meaning. For me, the act of writing this script is what gives this script its meaning.

This design is the first one in which I have used a colour other than white to print on the apparels. The grey colour in the background helps increase the weight of the design without making a mess (I hope). The fluid movements of the pattern creates a contrast in structure, further distinguishing the background from the foreground. I plan to continue experimenting with this style of composition in my future projects.
