about the design :

The composition of this design is heavily inspired by the traditional Sak Yant tattoos. The imagery used in this design revolves around the theme of the ever-flowing river of time, the chaos it brings and our metamorphosis by transcending the chaos.

The central element of this composition is the ‘grim reaper’,one of the most commonly used personifications of death. The idea of death is something that I ponder upon on a daily basis. So I tried to create something around that feeling. I think the reaper is one of the most powerful personifications of death and its image has always fascinated me.

The use of secondary images of animals, insects, flowers, etc. to support the central subject is common in traditional Sak Yant backpiece tattoo designs. In this design too, the secondary subjects of lotus, butterflies, centipedes, the eye, the sun and the moon further intensifies the ‘grim’ effect of the central subject.

Those who have been following my work would already be aware of the script I have been developing for almost two years now. The script used in this design is my latest development of the same. I have tried to explain these developments in more detail in the second design of this collection.

The occult and mysterious essence of Sak Yant tattoos have always drawn me towards them. In this design, I have attempted to retain the same essence, while trying to experiment with subjects depicting constant states of change, metamorphosis, death and our awareness of it all.
