about the design :
The design on the socks draws inspiration from the ‘kolam’ patterns of the Southern parts of India.
The ‘Kolam’ are geometrical patterns made on the floors, walls on the entrances of houses, temples, etc. to ward of evil spirits and welcome positive energy into the space. The patterns consists of interwoven lines and dots, drawn using rice flour or grounded natural seeds.
Kolam tattoos were done using traditional instruments known as ‘mungurah’ by female tattoo artists called ‘pachai kuthuthu amma’ to protect the bearers from evil spirits and diseases.
Through this pair of socks, I have attempted to create a bridge between the past and the future. I have reimagined the ancient Kolam patterns in an attempt to recreate them as something from the future. By rearranging the lines and dots, I have attempted to create a new visual stimulus for the viewers.
